[Fri, Oct 9, at 7:30pm, at Sara D. Roosevelt Park] A special one-night only production of regional play, Red Flower Princess 紅花公主 by Chinatown-based Min (Fujianese) opera group, Sino-US Culture & Art Drama Theatre 中美文化戏剧院.
Red Flower Princess 紅花公主 is a period comedy written by Fuzhounese director Hong Keren 洪可人 in the 80’s or early 90’s. The play follows the life of two cousins, Miaozai (male) and Yehao (female) as they navigate cultural norm of 重男輕女, or the preferential treatment for sons over daughters. Since its premiere, this has become a classic piece for the Fuzhounese diaspora.
This production will feature the first 45 minutes of a nearly 3 hour play. Supertitles for the libretto will be provided in Chinese characters and translated into English. Backdrop artwork by Jia Sung.
This performance is part of Nights in Sara Roosevelt Park, a free evening event series presented by FABnyc (Fourth Arts Block) held in "The Pit" at Sara D. Roosevelt Park in collaboration with other local groups. This performance is also a part of the 9th annual month-long Chinatown Arts Festival presented by Think!Chinatown across Manhattan’s Chinatown.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Sino-US Culture & Art Drama Theatre 中美文化戲劇院 is a performance troupe based in Manhattan’s Chinatown with the mission to promote Chinese culture, specifically the unique artform from the Fuzhou region -- Min (Fujianese) Opera. Since its founding as a non-profit organization in 2019, the amateur troupe have been tirelessly activating and engaging the community with performances.

FABnyc was founded in 2001 by a coalition of cultural and community nonprofits on East 4th Street to save their homes.
