What's special about Fuzhounese zongzi?
Fuzhounese zongzi is special in that it only involves very simple ingredients: glutinous or long sweet rice (w/ the rice occasionally mixed with peanuts) wrapped and steamed in bamboo leaves. Fuzhounese zongzi is eaten plain or can be dipped into a bit of sugar or even honey. While many styles of zongzi are wrapped into taller, bulky 3D pyramids or four-cornered pillows, the Fuzhounese style is well known for a beautiful elongated, tightly wrapped thin, sharp cone shape. For the very skilled, you can even wrap a Fuzhounese style zongzi using one very good piece of bamboo leaf.
It's very different than other styles of zongzi that you’ll come across in Chinatown such as the Cantonese / Taishan style or Shanghainese style where these styles are often loaded with pork, eggs, peanuts, and/or even mung bean (savory types).
