“Arts Hop” with Think!Chinatown

For “Meet Us In Chinatown” with ABNY: June 17th 4-8pm

Come discover the many layers of Chinatown through self-guided walking tours of historic architecture & new neighborhood murals, a Tai Chi class at the park, and a block party of Chinese vinyl classics. T!C will be hosting pop-up performances of traditional and contemporary music in our outdoor Assembly for Chinatown build-outs. We’ll be sprinkling programming around the neighborhood for you to come by and enjoy!

The “Arts Hop” Lineup:

  • 4:15-5 PM: Tai Chi and Qi Gong Movements with Sokie Lee in Columbus Park (on the fields, look out for the T!C banner)

  • 5-7 PM: Traditional Chinese Instrumental Music by Music From China, pop-up performance, refreshing teas & dimsum treats at Grand Tea & Imports and Delight Wong — 300 Grand St, Performance times 5-5:15, 5:30-5:45, 6-6:15, 6:30-6:45pm

  • 5:30-7 PM: Songs from multi-instrumentalist songwriter Treya Lam at Alimama and Yinji —89 Bayard St, Performance times 5:30-5:50, 6-6:20, 6:30-6:50pm

  • 8-9 PM: After Party at the Mosco Street Newsstand - featuring vintage Chinatown vinyl favorites with YiuYiu (Mosco & Mott St)

“Arts Hop” with Think!Chinatown is produced in collaboration with Association for a Better New York (ABNY) and community partners Abacus Bank, Chinatown Core Block Association, and Welcome To Chinatown as part of “Meet Us In Chinatown.” Sign up for a scavenger hunt, mural experience tour, and food crawl!

“Our Chinatown Landmarks” with Urban Archive

Think!Chinatown presents a walk of the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown, based on the stories of its residents, as collected by archivist and oral historian Rochelle Kwan. Follow along online or use the stories to connect with the neighborhood through the memories of its residents as you take a walk around the neighborhood.

Hear from the voices of our friends and neighbors as they take you through an audio journey of their own personal favorite places, past and present in Chinatown.


About the Artists:

SOKIE LEE is a Movement Motivator, promoting health through mindful movement. Sokie has taught in-person classes at the 92Y, Lindblad/National Geographic, Hospital for Special Surgery, Mount Sinai Beth Israel, and Swedish Institute. An avid learner. Sokie continually focuses on the study of Qigong and Martial Arts. She also enjoys kayaking, kickboxing, scuba diving, cooking, and traveling.Born in Hong Kong, Sokie has lived in New York since age nine. Raised with Chinese holistic lifestyle, Sokie continues that way of living today.

MUSIC FROM CHINA

Music From China is a New York-based chamber ensemble performing traditional Chinese music and contemporary work. Established in 1984, the group has performed at art & cultural institutions, schools, colleges, universities, libraries, and music festivals across the U.S. An active participant in preserving Chinese American cultural heritage, Music From China presents free community concerts, music instruction, and the Music From China Youth Orchestra program.

TREYA LAM is an American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. Their debut album Good News was released via Kaki King’s label, Short Stuff Records. Lam is an active member of the Resistance Revival Chorus and has their song Dawn featured on their debut album This Joy - released on Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records. Treya was a resident at Joe’s Pub in 2019 and frequently works with ecotheatre company Superhero Clubhouse. Lam has performed at the Prospect Park Bandshell, MASS MoCA, Greenwood Cemetery, American Museum of Natural History and the New York Public Library. They will make their Lincoln Center debut this June. 

YIU YIU
YiuYiu (aka Rochelle Kwan) is a community organizer based in NYC's Manhattan Chinatown. Pulling from family collections inherited from longtime Chinatown members and her own family, we travel back in time to 1950s-80s Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, and also to the homes that these records once rang through. This project is a community effort rooted in fostering intergenerational relationships and dance floors through music and memory.
